Flavour is used to describe an ingredient, or blend of ingredients, which will give both taste and fragrance to cosmetics and personal care items. These include lip balms, lip scrubs, lipsticks and toothpastes.
The way we experience flavour is linked to our sense of smell. We smell flavours with our nose and some of the scent also enters our olfactory system via the throat. Some flavours taste good because they smell good.
Our tongue has taste buds all over it, reaching right back to the throat. Our taste buds can only detect a few flavours: sweet, salty, sour, bitter and savoury.
Helen Ambrosen has created most of our flavours. She feels that Whipstick’s flavour is the most delicious. She learned by tasting and smelling the materials she was using.
Simon Constantine worked on Honey Trap with Helen’s support. They ate ice-cream and jelly beans to understand the taste!
Let Them Eat Cake, our vegan Christmas lip balm, was inspired by Christmas cake. Vegans love cake, and when Mark Constantine realised we needed a vegan lip balm, making a flavour blend was key.
Many of our flavoured products are made with cocoa butter, which has a natural chocolate-aroma. We also use sugar to scrub the lips and this imparts flavour, too.
Flavours of confectionery, among others, can often inspire the invention of products. Toothpaste generally requires peppermint or spearmint, but essential oils of rose and vanilla can be lovely, too.
